What we have been doing lately in class (wikis)-My PB wiki draft #2

Lately in class we have been creating our own wikis. (Sample below; my draft) For the past three to four days, all of us had to research, write down our sources and info down on a sheet that would help us organize, and also transfer all that info on to a wiki and make up three questions also to put on the wiki. All this was done in class, except for the exception that you could do research and the three questions at home.

Plateaus are not just your everyday landforms. Oh no, they're much bigger than any old hill or river. Some plateaus even have lakes on the top of them!!! You can find some of these breath-taking and eye-popping places such as the Chang Tang in Tibet, or the Andean Altiplano, and also in Guiana (Guyana), Poland, and the Monte Roraima. Some of the plateaus are named after the places they're located in such as the Columbia Plateau and the Colorado Plateau. The Colorado Plateau was is a lava plateau, which simply means that it was built from lava. Western High Plateas are located west of the Rockies. the Appalachian Plateau first came from the Laramide Revolution. The universal definition of a plateau is a large area of flat land that is raised high above sea level OR an area of highland, usually consisting of relatively flat rural area. Basically it means that this landform is raised above the ground of what us humans usually live on. Mesas (smaller than plateaus but similar in shape), rivers (can flow through a plateau), mountains (bigger and pointier than plateaus), erosion (what helps form plateaus), and valleys (what is in between plateaus when grouped together in the same spot)-they all connect to this spectacular form. A miscellaneous fact would be that plateaus are always forming, even when we don't know it.

Current Event Numero Uno aka Earth's Interior Lesson

In class just a few days ago, my red class and I read and learned about the Earth's Interior (hence the name/topic title) and the following is what I learned:

~the Earth's suface (crust) is always changing form (because of tectonic plates-from Bill Nye the Science Guy)
~the farthest mine in the world is a gold mine in South Africa, which has a depth of 3.8 km
~but in order to reach the Earth's core, you need to reach down farther-1,600 times more farther to be exact
~geologists dig/drill down deep inside the Earths to learn about its structure
~samples of rock come up from the 12km deep holes
~in these samples of rock geologists can form a conclusion on how the Earth is doing
~indirect methods are how scientist observe the Earth, too
~when earthquakes happen, seismic waves also occur
~pressure and temperature contribute greatly to the topic because...
~as you go deeper in to the Earth rock formations in the Earth begin to grow cooler
~after about 20 meters your instruments would indicate that it's getting warmer
~this keeps going on for every 40m the temperature rises 1 Celsius

~the definition of pressure is a force pressing on an area

Newton's Three Laws

Recently in class, i learned about Newton's three laws of motion.

The first law of motion states that an object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion at constant velocity unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. An example of this would be someone that has their seatbelt on in a car and and suddenly pushes on the brake.

Newton's second law of motion shows how force, mass, and acceleration are related. An example would be when you push just a swivel chair compared to when you're pushing the swivel chair with SOMEONE IN IT.

The third law of moition states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. An example of the third law: when you type on a keyboard you press a key and on the computer screen you see the letter you typed.

i-Pods banned

First cellphones and digital devices, now the iPod. Students have been using their iPods to cheat on tests and some teacher had overheard a few students talking about it-that's how the school system heard. One teacher found and confiscated an iPod from a student and found answers to a test among the songs. A student said that even though the schoo says that you can't use them anymore, that it won't stop using them to cheat. Another student said that she used to be able to listen to music after she was done with her test, and now she can't do that anymore. This all took place at Duke University in NC.

Teenagers Gone Crazy

In Perth Amboy as the story tells there is a fifteen year old boy who apologized to ABC's lawyers about impersonating an ABC employee, called YouTube and said that he wanted all clips of 'The Chaser's War on Everything' removed from the site.

Courtney Gibson, the captain of ABC-TV comedy said quote, '"Everyone does dumb stuff when they are fifteen."'

She also told ABC radio that she is glad that the teen has apologized.

In Cecil County there was a remarkable story of Debbie Parkhurst and her dog, two year old Toby. The story is that Debbie was eating an apple and started choking. She tried calling 911 but it wouldn't work. Right there and then Toby jumped on her and knocked her down to the ground. Toby used his paws to add pressure on her chest and out came the apple. Toby then ate the apple. Some people think that it was amazing that Toby knew what to do. Others simply think that she was just lucky. Debbie says that it was remarkable because Toby wasn't supposed to be there. He was adopted by Debbie from a dumpster.

spring! finally! i mean, really! today when i was going to chinese school i was thinking about all of the hypothesis's that the earth doesn't just warm up every decade or whatever, it really might be global warming and i bet that i wasnt the only one that was thinking about global warming!

Diabetes:A Growing Problem

About 1 out of 8 people have diabetes and 1/3 of the people in New York don't even know that they have it! Signs of diabetes are blindness, strokes, heart problems, and kidney failure. Robotic Garage???

I thought that having a robot park your car for you was quite impossible. Well it's not. The year 2057 has come to the present. Today, on ABC7, or, for more info, http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=local&id=4984574, the company Automotion introduced the robotic garage that will be in Little Italy, New York; Brooklyn, New York; and Manhattan, New York. It's simple, easy, and stores and saves space easily. An easier lilfestyle has just arrived. I stronly support this idea and hope it will flourish but the price is high and some people in the lower class may not be able to afford it.

Who ever heard of a robot parking your car for you? I thought that that wasn't possible till at least 2057! Well, I was wrong. In Manhattan, Little Italy and Brooklyn, New York a robot parks your car for you. You just slide your card on this ATM-like machine. Then you park your car on a platform. While you leave, the robot whisks your car away and stores it in a "car-shelf". In this type of garage, you could store more than the usual number of cars! Talk about easy storage! It's from a group called automotion.

Royalty Tonight

There was a newsflash about Britain's prince trying to conserve and prevent greenhouse gas from spreading and in that cause he was converting all his transport vehicles such as his cars to bio-fuel, which is supposed to be organic and help prevent greenhouse gas and the burning of fossil fuels. There wasn't an available date but I think that is was a time span from a very recent date. Since Prince Charles has been traveling around, there is no telling when he decided to do this. If I can find the exact date I'll put on the site. I think that this is a very good idea and the prince even, what seems to business people who don't stop to think about the waste they are producing, is making some sacrifices. I strongly support the prince's ideas and I think that if every one started to follow what he's doing then people will feel cleaner and better.

Today in class we did toothpick fish. We had to fill out a chart and complete questions. (The chart above)

I think that this activity was okay, but it was at first, confusing. If there were more simpler and easier to read directions than I would understand it more. Some questions there were were like: "Can two green fish mate and have orange offspring? Why or why not?" or "Have all the yellow alleles disappeared?" We had to answer these questions in our notebooks. The little purple person will say, "did you notice that the hydrogen ...." or "that's a completed segment. this is one way to think of DNA..."

What I Learned In Class Today and Links to Science Sites
